In the proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer, the 0.25mm thick titanium fiber felt plays a key role as the gas diffusion layer (GDL) on the anode side.
Titanium fiber felt for general use(0.4 and 0.6mm)
0.4mm gauge: As an electrode substrate for redox flow batteries (such as vanadium batteries), its porosity (typically 50–60%) and thickness optimize electrolyte distribution, reduce concentration polarization, and improve energy storage efficiency.
0.6mm gauge: For high-power flow battery systems, it enhances mechanical support and prevents electrode deformation while maintaining high conductivity and chemical stability.

PEM pure water electrolysis hydrogen production industry:
Titanium fiber felt, when used as the anode electrode in PEM (Pure Electrometic Molecular Electrolysis) hydrogen production cells, demonstrates its superior oxidation resistance, water permeability, and heat dissipation. Especially when used as the anode catalytic electrode, it enables high current density and long-life electrolyzers.
It is a preferred material for improving hydrogen purity and enhancing electrolyzer stability and lifespan, particularly in hydrogen production.
PEMFC fuel cell industry:
Titanium fiber felt is also widely used in the fuel cell industry, whether as a gas diffusion layer or a water diffusion layer. Currently, Toyota's latest generation of most advanced hydrogen fuel cell vehicles uses titanium fiber felt instead of carbon paper.

Precious metal coating
The main reasons for coating titanium fiber felt with precious metal coating in PEM electrolyzers include the following:

(1) Conductivity optimization

The coating needs to provide a low-resistance electron transport path, with a target resistivity of less than 10⁻⁴ Ω·cm (ohm·cm). The interface contact resistance can be reduced by introducing highly conductive materials (such as amorphous carbon, TiC (titanium carbide)) and gradient structure design.

(2) Corrosion resistance improvement

In a strong acidic (pH = 1~3) and high potential (1.8~2.0 V) environment, the coating needs to inhibit the corrosion of Cl⁻ (chloride ions) and H⁺ (hydrogen ions) to avoid substrate dissolution and passivation film rupture.

(3) Catalytic activity enhancement

The coating needs to reduce the OER (oxygen evolution reaction) reaction barrier and improve hydrogen production efficiency. Precious metal oxides (such as IrO₂, iridium oxide) and transition metal compounds (such as Nb₂O₅, niobium pentoxide) are selected as catalytic active components.
