Titanium electrode for electrolytic copper foil

1. Application field of copper foil
As one of the basic materials of the electronics industry, electrolytic copper foil is mainly used to manufacture printed circuit boards (PCBs), copper clad laminates (CCLs), etc. It is widely used in home appliances, communications, computing (3C) industries, etc. In recent years, due to the rapid development of the electronics industry and its development characteristics of dense, light, thin, short and small, higher and newer requirements have been put forward for copper foil, which are mainly manifested in: low (low roughening), thin (development to less than 12 microns), high (high physical properties, reliability), no (no defects in surface appearance). Electrolytic copper foil belongs to a copper processing product with a higher technical level.

2. Brief description of copper foil production process
Although the specifications and performance of electrolytic copper foil are different due to the differences of each copper foil manufacturing enterprise, the manufacturing process is basically the same. That is, electrolytic copper or waste copper wire with the same purity as electrolytic copper is used as raw material, dissolved in sulfuric acid to make an aqueous solution of copper sulfate, and a metal roller is used as the cathode. Through electrolytic reaction, metal copper is continuously electrolytically deposited on the surface of the cathode roller, and it is continuously peeled off from the cathode roller. This process is called raw foil electrolysis process. The side (glossy side) peeled off from the cathode is the side seen on the surface of the laminate or printed circuit board, and the reverse side (commonly known as the rough side) is the side that needs a series of surface treatments and is bonded to the resin in the printed circuit board.

3. Principle of electrolysis
During electrolysis, cations in the electrolyte migrate to the cathode and are reduced by electrons at the anode. Anions run to the anode and lose electrons and are oxidized. Two electrodes are connected to the copper sulfate solution and a direct current is applied. At this time, copper and hydrogen will be found to be precipitated on the plate connected to the cathode of the power supply. If it is a copper anode, copper dissolution and oxygen precipitation will occur at the same time. The reaction is as follows:
Cathode: Cu2+ +2e → 2Cu
2H+ +2e → H2↑
Anode: 4OH- +4e → 2H2O + O2↑
2S042-+2H2O -4e → 2H2S04 + O2↑

The copper dissolved from the anode replenishes the consumption of copper ions in the electrolyte. The cathode surface is treated in a certain way so that the copper layer deposited on the cathode can be peeled off, and a copper sheet of a certain thickness will be obtained. Copper sheet with certain functions is called copper foil.
