Loose wheel hub bolts may seem like a minor issue, but they can actually lead to the following serious consequences:

Wheel hub displacement: Loose bolts cause unstable fixation between the wheel hub and shaft head, which may lead to wheel hub displacement and affect driving direction.

Tire detachment: In extreme cases, complete loosening or detachment of wheel hub bolts may cause the tire to detach from the vehicle, resulting in a major traffic accident.

2. What are the hazards of over-tightening?

Some people believe that wheel bolts are used to fasten tires. When the tires are running at high speed or under dynamic load, the external load is large. Therefore, they should be pre-tightened with a large torque.

It is even necessary to tighten the bolts beyond yield, just like other parts of the chassis. So, what are the hazards of blindly tightening them to death?

1) When tightened too much, the wheel bolts will enter the yield state and produce irreversible plastic deformation. Bolts that produce plastic deformation cannot be reused many times, which means that the wheel bolts need to be replaced every time the wheels are replaced, which is very inconvenient.

2) When tightened too much, the axial pre-tightening force of the wheel bolts is very large. When subjected to higher external loads, the bolts are prone to fracture and failure.

3) When tightened too much, the internal thread of the hand piece is subjected to a large load. After repeated use, it is easy to slip. At this time, the hand piece can only be replaced, which is inconvenient and costly.

4) When tightened too much, the pressure-bearing surface of the hand piece is loaded with a large load, especially for aluminum alloy wheels, which are prone to surface crushing.

3. How to tighten?

In terms of design, for the connection structure of the commonly used 5 wheel bolts. If a steel wheel hub is used, its clamping force should be ≥35KN, if an aluminum wheel hub is used, its clamping force should be ≥25KN, and for Titanium Lug Bolt, its clamping force is usually between 100 and 120KN.

Considering that the wheel bolts need to be reused, after the wheel bolts are tightened 5 times, their clamping force still needs to meet the requirements of ≥35KN for steel wheel hubs and ≥25KN for aluminum wheel hubs. It is best to use Titanium Lug Bolt 100--120NM.

In terms of torque, the recommended process torque is 120Nm, and the maximum does not exceed 140Nm. This data is the assembly torque used in the general assembly workshop.

The yield torque of the wheel bolt is usually above 180Nm-200Nm. From a design point of view, the process torque is much lower than the yield torque. This is also to allow the wheel bolts to always be used in the linear section of the tightening curve. After repeated use, the performance will not decrease.

Therefore, for the wheel connection position, when repairing and tightening, a fixed torque wrench or a digital wrench should be used to tighten. The usual tightening torque is about 120Nm or tightened to the torque of the original factory assembly of the vehicle.

1) Over-tightening of the wheel bolts will cause the bolts to yield excessively, resulting in irreversible plastic deformation; over-stretched bolts are prone to breakage when subjected to external loads; the thread load on the handpiece is large and easy to slip; the surface of the handpiece is easy to crush and other problems.

2) When repairing, it is best to use a fixed torque wrench to tighten the wheel bolts. The tightening torque is recommended to be 120Nm or the original factory assembly torque, and the maximum is generally not more than 140Nm; if a non-fixed torque wrench is used, it is recommended that an experienced maintenance technician tighten the assembly, and it is not recommended that the technician use all his body strength to tighten it to death; the assembly sequence is pre-tightening first, and tightening one by one in the diagonal direction when tightening.
