What's Timascus?
Titanium damascus(timascus) also known as Mokuti or TiMoku. It's made from different grades of titanium or titanium alloys. Generally, titanium damascus/timascus/Mokuti is processed by multi-material (pure titanium or titanium alloys), fused by forging (physical fusion), and the block, rods&bars and plate billets are processed by twisting, extruding, straightening, cutting, polishing and other processes. The billets are heated or anodized, and finally show brilliant colors (red,yellow,blue,golden,orange,pink the color affected by temperature) and beautiful patterns. Since only the approximate direction and the thickness of layers of the patterns can be controlled during processing.So each timascus crafts are unique.
Over the past 30 years, titanium alloys have become very popular and this is all the merit of knife enthusiasts from the United States. The most popular was Timascus, a titanium composite created by American craftsmen Tom Ferry. Its manufacturing process has been patented. The purpose of titanium Damascus was to create a corrosion-resistant, non-magnetic and lightweight laminated material that could give the knife the most beautiful appearance without flaws. This composite material is typically composed of between 50 and 300 layers of varying titanium alloys, all fused into one piece through diffusion welding (most often grades CP and 6AL4V). When heated or anodized, the colors of various alloys become different. Each titanium alloy has the potential to create a new color combination.

How is titanium Damascus colored?
The core is just one sentence: Use electricity or heat to create an extremely thin transparent oxide film on the surface of titanium.
Light passes through this film and is reflected twice on the titanium surface and the bottom layer of the film. The light waves interfere with each other, and what you see is a certain specific color. The thickness of the film determines its color - if it is thin, it will be golden or purple; if it is thick, it can reach blue or green.
There are two mainstream ways to specifically create this layer of film:
Anodic oxidation (electrochemical)
This is the most commonly used and precisely controlled method.
You need: a DC power supply with adjustable voltage, a container, some electrolyte (such as disodium phosphate solution, or even a TSP multi-effect cleaner water solution will do), wires, and a lot of patience.
How to play: Connect the titanium part to the positive electrode (anode), find a stainless steel plate or something similar to connect to the negative electrode (cathode), and immerse them all in the electrolyte. Then slowly increase the voltage.
Essence: Voltage has a direct correspondence with color. From low to high voltage, the colors will follow this order: bronze -> purple -> blue -> cyan -> green -> yellow... The higher the voltage, the thicker the film, and the color moves further back into the spectrum. If you want to stop at a certain color, just stabilize that voltage. Experts all gently turn the knob with their hands, watch the color change, and integrate their mind, hands and eyes.
Thermal oxidation (using fire attack
This one is more primitive, Wilder and the effects are less controllable, but when played well, it has a unique charm.
You need: a very clean and polished titanium surface, and a heat source (a propane spray gun, or even a gas stove will do).
How to play: Directly heat the titanium part evenly with the outer flame of the musket. Watch its surface color start to change as the temperature rises.
The essence: The sequence of color changes is similar to that of anodizing, but it is controlled by temperature rather than voltage. The difficulty lies in uniformity. The heat control is extremely hard to master, and it is very easy to produce a mottled effect of varying shades and a smoky color. Some people are in pursuit of this random and unique "seductive" pattern.
Why can patterns be produced?
Titanium Damascus itself is forged from two different titanium alloys (such as 6AL4V and CP) together. Their crystal structures are different, so under the same voltage or temperature, the thickness of the oxide film formed will vary slightly. It is precisely this tiny difference in thickness that causes the adjacent areas to display completely different colors, vividly contrasting the patterns forged beneath.
The last step, and one that many people don't mention: sealing.
This layer of color is produced by physical interference. The film itself is very thin and will wear out. After coloring is completed, a transparent protective layer must be applied immediately, such as matte or high-gloss resin or special jewelry protective paint, to "lock" the color inside. Otherwise, if you touch it a few times, the color will fade.
Playing this is just a craft. Electricity has its own delicacy, and fire has its own casualness. There are only those theories, but the feeling of the fingers and the final product are two different things.
