Instructions For Correct Use Of Platinum Titanium Anode

Nov 24, 2022

As an anode material, platinum coated titanium electrode has four outstanding characteristics:

1. Strong corrosion resistance, durability and high temperature resistance, high stability, and can be used for various media

2. The cost is lower than that of pure gold and pure platinum anodes, but they have similar electrochemical properties;

3. The overpotential of oxygen evolution reaction is very high, and that of hydrogen evolution reaction is very low;

4. It has the characteristics of high output current density, uniform conductivity and low loss, and is suitable for DSA insoluble anode.

Correct use of platinum coated titanium electrode:

1. Before using the platinum coated titanium electrode, the presence of "fluorine" ions and "phosphate" ions in the plating solution should be excluded (must be detected). After confirming that there is no chemical composition that corrodes the platinum coated titanium electrode, the platinum coated titanium electrode can be used safely. Otherwise, the base material at the bottom of the platinum coated titanium electrode will be severely corroded, the platinum coating will fall off, and the service life will be shortened. Do not use hard chromium additives and recycled industrial chromic anhydride containing fluoride ions casually.

2. Reasonable selection of the best process: The current density of platinum coated titanium electrode should be less than 50A/dm2, and the tank voltage should be less than 10V, otherwise the service life will be affected. If it is serious, the anode will be electrocorrosive, dissolved, and the coating will fall off. The process of anodic oxidation reaction without solid oxide generation should be selected as far as possible to avoid oxide thickening and passivation affecting the conductivity of platinum coated titanium electrode.

The reason for anode breakdown is determined by the inherent characteristics of the titanium material itself. When the tank pressure is greater than 10V, the titanium surface in contact with the platinum coating starts to dissolve slightly. When the tank pressure is completely broken down at 12V, we can only see about 11V. At this time, the current cannot be added and the anode is damaged. Therefore, the tank pressure for safe use of platinum coated titanium electrodes is set to be below 10V.

3. In principle, the surface area of the cathode should be less than the effective anode area (i.e. the anode area under the liquid surface), and should not be used when the anode area is less than the cathode area, otherwise the anode will be easily broken down and cannot be used normally.

4. When the bath impedance increases, the bath voltage will also increase. When the bath voltage exceeds 10V, the current should not be increased, but should be adjusted appropriately, such as: the current is reduced by 10%, and the electroplating time is extended by 10%.
