Application Of Titanium Alloy in Medical Field

Nov 16, 2022

1, Advantages of titanium in medical treatment

Titanium has become a widely used medical metal material in recent years due to its advantages of non rusting, bacteriostasis, non magnetism and non deformation. Due to its "biological" property, titanium has good biocompatibility with human tissues and no side effects, so it has been widely used in the medical field.

According to research, two types of titanium, 6AL4V and 6AL4V ELI, are most closely related to the medical field. 6AL4V and 6AL4V ELI are titanium alloys containing 6% aluminum and 4% vanadium. They are widely used in the medical field because of their strongest affinity for human body. In addition, Gr.5 and Gr.23 titanium alloys in the United States are also used for different medical devices according to different grades. At the same time, the Ti-6AI-4V and Ti-6AI-4V ELI titanium alloys are widely used in the dentistry field due to their strong structure and non fragility. At present, some dental braces, dentures and other medical products have used these two titanium alloys.

2, Application of titanium in medical devices

Titanium alloy medical instruments are the third generation surgical instruments after carbon steel and stainless steel. In order to improve the rust resistance of stainless steel instruments, surface treatment such as chrome plating and electropolishing is often required. However, chromium is toxic, and the detached chromium layer will have a certain impact on the human body.

The advantages of medical titanium alloys as medical devices are:

1,The instrument is light, which can reduce the damage to blood vessels, muscles and organs during the operation and reduce the fatigue of doctors. Medical titanium instruments are more suitable for fine microsurgery;

2. Good corrosion resistance and non-toxic, no rust on the equipment, no infection on the wound, and quick wound healing;

3. The elasticity of medical titanium alloy is moderate, which is suitable for making forceps, tweezers, microsurgery knives and other instruments;

4. When operating under shadowless lamp, the reflective performance of medical titanium is weak, which is more suitable than stainless steel;

Medical titanium medical instruments mainly include scalpel, surgical forceps, surgical forceps, chest expander, suture, etc. Compared with other materials (such as stainless steel wire), medical titanium wire used as surgical suture has the advantages of small tissue reaction and good torsion resistance. After suture, the surgical wound is not tight, and the bone suture site is not easy to shift. The suture is usually made of medical titanium wire (TA1 or TA2 wire) with a diameter of 0.5~0.8mm. In addition, titanium nickel alloy wire can produce soft elasticity, which can promote rapid wound healing.

Medical titanium alloy is also an important material for rehabilitation devices, such as wheelchair, crutch, splint, medical instruments, etc.
