Electrolysis of saturated brine by cation exchange membrane (chlor-alkali industry)
Cation exchange membrane has special selective permeability, which only allows cations to pass through and prevents anions and gases from passing through, that is, only allows H+ and Na+ to pass through, while Cl-, OH- and the bipolar products hydrogen and chlorine cannot pass through, thus preventing the risk of chlorine and hydrogen mixing and possibly causing explosion, and also preventing chlorine from reacting with another cathode product NaOH to generate NaClO to affect the purity of caustic soda.

Main raw material of chlor-alkali industry: saturated brine
Because crude brine contains impurities such as mud, calcium ions, magnesium ions, and sulfate ions, it is far from meeting the requirements of electrolysis (for example: if crude salt is not refined, magnesium ions and hydroxide ions will combine to form magnesium hydroxide, which will block the diaphragm in the diaphragm electrolyzer and cause electrolysis failure), so it must be purified and refined to obtain refined saturated brine.

A refined saturated brine is added to the anode chamber
Pure water containing a certain amount of NaOH solution is added to the cathode chamber.
After power is turned on, the hydrogen ions in the water discharge on the cathode surface to generate hydrogen, so the concentration of hydroxide ions increases relatively. Because Na+ passes through the cation exchange membrane from the anode chamber to the cathode chamber, NaOH solution is obtained in the cathode chamber; after a period of time, the sodium hydroxide solution is discharged, and then a small amount of aqueous solution containing sodium hydroxide is added to the cathode chamber to continue electrolysis.
After power is turned on, CI- discharges on the anode surface to generate chlorine, and sodium ions pass through the cation exchange membrane. After a period of time, the saturated salt water in the anode chamber becomes lighter. After it is discharged, refined saturated salt water is added to the anode chamber to continue electrolysis.
