With the successful application of ammonia-evolving titanium anode in the chlor-alkali industry, oxygen-evolving titanium anode has gradually been favored by applied electrochemistry. In an acidic oxygen-evolving environment, the anode will be severely corroded by acid and the strong oxidizing property of oxygen evolution, and the anode will be worn and corroded. Therefore, a long oxygen-evolving titanium anode with excellent electrochemical catalytic activity and superior electrolysis life has always been the goal of electrochemical workers.

 

 

Two major categories of commonly used titanium anodes

Iridium-based oxygen-evolving coated titanium anode and ruthenium-based chlorine-evolving coated titanium anode are currently the two main types of electrode materials for precious metal-coated titanium anodes, which use RuO₂ and IrO₂ as the main active substances, respectively. At present, the preparation method of coated titanium anode is mainly based on high-temperature thermal decomposition oxidation. Although the iridium-tantalum coated anode is not as active as the ruthenium-based coated anode in chlorine evolution, it can maintain a certain stability in the oxygen evolution environment. Therefore, the iridium-tantalum coated anode is currently the most widely used electrochemical anode material in oxygen evolution environments.

It mainly involves dissolving various metal salts in organic solvents to form a coating liquid that is brushed on a titanium substrate and sintered at high temperature. The coated titanium anode is obtained after repeated brushing and sintering.

 

 

Advantages and disadvantages of thermal decomposition oxidation method

Thermal decomposition oxidation method has the advantages of low cost, simple process, and easy grasp of coating points by staff. The life of titanium anode is jointly affected by the precious metal loading, calcination temperature and substrate pretreatment, among which calcination temperature and insulation time are the main factors affecting the quality of the anode.

The precious metal coating prepared by thermal decomposition oxidation method has some deficiencies in microstructure. Under the electron microscope, the coating anode will have cracks after calcination, making the titanium anode matrix easy to be penetrated by the electrolyte, resulting in anode corrosion failure. However, as far as the current application of precious metal coating anode is concerned, thermal decomposition method is still the mainstream preparation method.
