Specific use cases of titanium plates in the power industry

In recent years, titanium plates have been used more and more widely in the power industry. Combined with the excellent specific strength, corrosion resistance and good fatigue performance of titanium alloy plates, titanium plates have been widely used in steam turbine blades, generator guard rings and other application scenarios. It has attracted great attention from professional engineers and manufacturers. Today I will give you a brief introduction.


       Due to the high specific strength, good fatigue performance and corrosion resistance of titanium alloy plates, it is also suitable for the blades of steam turbines, mainly the last stages of the low pressure section. Usually steam turbine blades are made of martensitic chromium stainless steel. The specific gravity of steel is large, and for high-speed rotating steam turbines, steel blades have to bear huge centrifugal force.


       In addition, the chloride phase sulfide is often contained in the water vapor, which is caused by reasons such as condenser leakage. These media cause pitting corrosion on the surface of the blade, and crevice corrosion is formed between the blade root and the blade tip or at the tie bar, and the corroded part will become the source of cracks. The fatigue performance of Crl3 steel is also not ideal, in the corrosive environment with saturated sodium chloride solution, especially in the case of low pH value and dissolved oxygen, the fatigue strength of Crl3 steel is greatly reduced. With titanium blades directly in place of the steel blades in the original geometry, the situation is greatly improved. The titanium blade is light, and the centrifugal force on the root of the blade can be reduced by 40% at the same speed. In addition, the corrosion resistance of titanium blades to salt-containing steam is far better than that of steel, and the fatigue performance of chinganjin is also higher than that of stainless steel.


       In air, the fatigue strength of Ti-6A1-4Y alloy is about 30% higher than that of Cr13 steel, and the fatigue strength of Crl3 steel in sodium chloride solution is even lower by 2/3-4/5. The fatigue properties of titanium alloys are not affected. Therefore, considering the pros and cons of fatigue performance under corrosion conditions, it is the most important factor to replace titanium with steel.


       Titanium alloy plates can also be used as generator guard rings. In the whole turbine generator system, the guard ring is an important part. The requirements of the large generator for the guard ring are high strength, good fracture resistance, insensitive to stress corrosion cracking in water medium, and should be non-magnetic. Current retaining rings are made of austenitic Fe—Mn—Cr alloys, which have a strong tendency to stress corrosion cracking and have problems with reliability in reaching high strengths.
