The choice of current density needs to be cautious, and high density cannot be simply pursued. Many manufacturers have experiments that can increase the current density to 6000A/㎡ or even higher under the same cell voltage. The benefit is that by increasing the current density and reducing the number of cells, the output can be enlarged without increasing the weight and volume.

 

However, the increase in the current density of the electrolytic cell will bring a series of problems, including shortened anode life, increased cell pressure, impact on the ton power consumption of the electrode, and to a certain extent, increased danger when using the electrolytic cell. The design and operation of the electrolytic cell need to consider many factors, including the structure of the electrolytic cell, the selection of electrode and diaphragm materials, and the characteristics of the electrolyte, all of which affect the performance and efficiency of the electrolytic cell. Therefore, optimizing the design and operating conditions of the electrolytic cell to improve current efficiency and reduce energy consumption is the key to ensuring the efficient operation of the electrolytic cell.

 

In addition, there is a certain relationship between the operating current density of the electrolytic cell and the cell pressure and DC power consumption. Within the limit current density range, the current density is proportional to the voltage, which means that an increase in current density may lead to an increase in DC power consumption. Therefore, in order to reduce costs, the electrolyzer is usually not operated at full load, but at a certain current density to balance the relationship between efficiency and cost.
