40 Years of Titanium Electrodes and Titanium Anodes

Mar 17, 2023

It has been 40 years since DSA came out in the late 1960s. Titanium anode was first used in the production of chlor-alkali. After the efforts of engineers and technicians from various countries, it has been widely used in chemical industry, environmental protection, water electrolysis, water treatment, electrometallurgy, electroplating, metal foil production, organic electrosynthesis, electrodialysis, cathodic protection and other industries. Under the impetus of researchers, theoretical knowledge such as electrodeology, electrode reaction engineering, electrode process kinetics, and electrocatalysis science has also been continuously innovated and enriched.

The birth of titanium anode has greatly promoted the development of salt electrolysis production, and is known as a major technological revolution in the chlor-alkali industry. The invention of DSA is one of the most important inventions in the electrochemical industry in the 20th century, and it is an epoch-making contribution to the field of electrochemistry.

Titanium anode is an electrode material that uses metal titanium as the substrate, and its surface is coated with oxides of platinum group elements. It was invented by the Dutchman H.B.Beer (1909~1994).

H. Beer was born in a family in the Netherlands in 1909 who was engaged in the production of watches and clocks. At the age of 16, he obtained the first patent on the "scarecrow" and began his life as an inventor. Afterwards, indoor heating devices were invented successively (1927, 1933), buttons that were easily disassembled for tropical clothes (1929), improved dry batteries that replaced zinc with aluminum (1932), air purification devices that sterilized with ozone (1936), and electrochemical decontamination Carbon dioxide gas such as submarines, a method of extracting oxygen from seawater (1950~1953), etc.

In 1956, titanium was produced on a large scale, and Beer noticed the possibility of using titanium as an electrode substrate. In 1965, Beer changed the covering of platinum group metals on titanium to covering platinum group metal oxides on titanium, and obtained the initial proof. According to the year of application, this is called Beer65 patent. In 1967, he invented the metal oxide that can form a thin film and the mixed oxide coating electrode that does not form a thin film conductor that has been used in production. This is called the Beer67 patent.

The Beer65 patent is an electrode with a valve-type metal as the core, and the oxides of platinum group metals or their alloys selected from platinum, iridium, rhodium, palladium, ruthenium, and osmium to form the outer layer, especially containing more than one non-platinum group metal oxides.

The so-called French metal refers to titanium, titanium alloy, tantalum, tantalum alloy, zirconium, zirconium alloy, niobium and niobium alloy. It is conductive when it is used as a cathode in salt water, and it will not be powered immediately when it is used as an anode. "Valve" That's what it means.

The Beer67 patent is an electrode for electrolysis. The surface coating of the electrode is composed of a mixed crystal substance of a metal oxide that can form a film and a conductor that does not form a film. The amount of metal oxide that forms a film is greater than 50mol%. Gold, silver, platinum, palladium, iridium, ruthenium, hunger, iron, nickel, chromium, copper, lead, manganese, etc., and their oxides, graphite, nitrides, carbides, and sulfides are expected to become non-film conductors. things etc.

The outstanding contribution of Beer67 is that he created a thermal decomposition coating method, coating a solution mixed with platinum group element salts on the metal substrate, maintaining an oxidative atmosphere, and performing thermal decomposition to obtain a platinum group metal oxide coating. layer. The success of the coating method does not use the electroplating method, so that the metal electrode starts from a titanium platinum-plated electrode and develops into today's titanium-based coated electrode.
