1. Electrolytic reaction: When the circulating cooling water flows through the electrochemical descaling device, the electrolytic cell inside the device is loaded with direct current, and the water molecules will be electrolytically decomposed under the action of this electric field. At the cathode (negative electrode), the water molecules (H₂O) are reduced by electrons to generate hydrogen (H₂) and hydroxide ions (OH⁻); while at the anode (positive electrode), some ions in the water (such as chloride ions Cl⁻) may be oxidized to produce hypochlorite or other oxidizing substances with bactericidal ability.

2. Anti-scaling mechanism: The increase of hydroxide ions (OH⁻) leads to an increase in the pH of cooling water, which promotes the combination of calcium ions (Ca²⁺) and magnesium ions (Mg²⁺) in the water with hydroxide ions to form more soluble calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂) and magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)₂), rather than forming insoluble carbonate or sulfate scale (such as CaCO₃ and MgSO₄). At the same time, these hydroxide ions can also react with bicarbonate ions (HCO₃⁻) in the water to form carbonate ions (CO₃²⁻), which in turn promotes the formation of soluble compounds and prevents them from being deposited into hard scale.

3. Descaling process: Some metal ions (such as calcium and magnesium ions) are attracted by electricity on the surface of the negative electrode and will directly adhere to the cathode to form a relatively loose soft scale. This soft scale can be peeled off from the electrode by regular reversal or mechanical cleaning, and discharged from the circulating water system with sewage. In addition, some electrochemical descaling equipment may also use specially designed electrode structures and reactors to optimize the electric field distribution, strengthen the above chemical reaction process, and improve the descaling efficiency.

4. Synergistic effect: In addition to descaling, electrochemical reactions can also produce some beneficial effects, such as inhibiting the growth of bacteria and algae (because of the generation of oxidants), and can slow down the corrosion of metal pipes to a certain extent.
