What are the precautions for grinding titanium alloy rods and TC4 titanium alloy?

Sep 25, 2024

Due to the tendency of titanium alloy materials to fill grinding wheels, it has brought difficulties to the grinding of titanium alloy rods and TC4 titanium alloys. During grinding, the high temperature rise generated at the interface between the metal and the grinding wheel causes high residual stress on the grinding surface, and the surface smoothness is also not ideal.

The following methods can basically solve these difficulties:

(1) Choose a suitable grinding wheel, such as a silicon carbide grinding wheel, with a medium sand particle size (60-80), medium hardness (J~M), and a surface speed of 700-1200 m/min. Aluminum oxide (alumina powder or corundum) grinding wheels should be used at lower speeds, such as 550-600 min. It also requires a medium granularity.

(2) Using lower grinding wheel speed and feed rate; Due to the low speed of the grinding wheel, there are fewer sparks generated.

(3) Cooling with buffering agents or cutting fluid coolants, using ceramic binders and chlorinated or vulcanized cutting oils, can achieve good results. No matter what type of coolant is used, it must be filtered well to eliminate the "fish tail" shaped stains caused by the recirculation of titanium particles.

(4) Titanium Mars may catch fire when encountering oil mist, but completely immersing the workpiece in oil can reduce this danger. The rust proof ammonium nitrite aqueous solution can completely eliminate the risk of fire.

But even the best grinding conditions can reduce the fatigue performance of the workpiece.
